Now for this week's question

If Void were ever made into a published comic, how would you want it to be handled? All new characters? Continue pre-existing character stories? What characters' stories would you be interested in seeing expanded? Obviously you don't have to answer all that, but just give us your thoughts on what you'd want a published Void comic to be like.

ENTERVOID [link]

Launched in 2002, EnterVOID offers artists a place to hone their artistic skills in a competitive and cooperative environment. Once artists create an original character, they are able to challenge any other artists on the site to a comic battle. Upon completion, a community of artists gives helpful critiques and advice on how to improve each artist’s craft even further. With hundreds of unique characters and thousands of artists, EnterVOID is a haven for those seeking to improve their comic creation skills.

Alumni of EnterVOID feature the talented Sheldon ("Supertron") Vella, Kenneth ("Madame Mirage") Rocafort, Eisner-nominated James ("Wonton Soup") Stokoe, and many others with published works.

EnterVOID.com features thousands of comics from a globally diverse set of artists, covering nearly every genre of storytelling and artistic style. We recently re-launched with a brand-new design and features to bring increased levels of interactivity for comic artists.

Maybe retellings/reimaginings of existing characters by different artists/writers. Obviously I wouldn't want the original artist to lose control, but it'd be nice to see affectionate retellings.
It'd be nice if they were self contained as well, so you wouldn't be missing references.

aside from any clearance issues, i think it'd be kind of neat. though to be frank, a lot of the better comics on the site aren't origin stories, or solid beginnings. so while it'd be cool for everyone from void, selling to an uninitiated market might not go over so well, as they wouldn't know the back story or share the same affections we'd have for certain characters (unless there was a mini update or story so far page prior).

i think if it were a possibility though, that it start with a tourney or a set of battles that are done for print quality, give a nice little introduction & set up. like either a self-contained event to get the ball rolling or some original stories even.

format wise, i think something similar to an anthology would be quite nice. not necessarily something as thick as pulpo. but something substantial. maybe quarterly? bearing participation & quality output of course.

I dont mind having the same characters, but I think stories should be all new, or at least the most recent as possible

I think it'd be slick to do a "best of void/void showcase" kind of book. Like maybe take a classic battle, the artists could have a chance to "remaster" pages if they wanted, then the battle would basically be presented as on the site but in print form. Except you could do a few pages of lead-in for both of the characters, to give an abbreviated backstory and how they got to that point, so readers go into the battle knowing what's up. (or just intro pages or whatever the artist wanted to do to present thier fighter) Do a few classic battles like this and you got a book.

The logistics of such a book are staggering(the conversion from rgb to cmyk alone would be crazy, not to mention reformatting! XD), so it's probably not a very realistic idea, especially since the lead-ins might involve past battles with other characters so you'd have to get a lot of permissions, etc..

BUT, it would be epic, nice intro to void for outsiders also, I'd buy 3 and give 2 to people I like! :D

I think keeping the same characters would be best. I mean the gang is what made Void, Void right? Lining up the vets and the artists that keep up a regular storyline and maybe syncing up stories, kinda like a Sin City thing. Every thing happening at the same time kinda deal. And then big events like Armageddon and SDT's make up issue arcs and then one shots to show characters stories happening while the big events are happening. ("What was Mize, P2 and the other WJ's up to while the SDT was going on?" "Was Bad Star mucking about while Armageddon popping off, taking advantage of the chaos?", etc)

Those were some classic BeyondBattles! Thanks for bringing them to attention

Maintaining the same universe, I think, is a must. Key characters like Warsaw and P2 can't really be written out, especially since so much of Void history rests on their shoulders.

However, I'm not sure if any one character could be spotlighted for a published series unless that character's artist is the one tapped to do the series (like if Fuu was doing it, then I could see a Basil-centric comic). Using a new character, with familiar supporting cast members, would probably do best, in my eyes.

I think there's a lot of different ways the concept could be taken, but new stories are a must.

I think everyone agrees in the concept of making it an collection of stories, as the whole concept of Void is a collection of different artists.

I'm however am more for just publishing good stories. Reprinting some of the already existing stuff on Void (the 'best of' concept) was already stated by thegreatgod as being too much of a pain in the ass to convert everything. Not covering a backstory to some of those stories (even with a quick lead in) may prove to be isolating to new readers. And to be honest, I'm sure some artist consider some of their older work ass and don't want it representing them when they can do better.

If we're going to call this 'Void Comics' it should have a Void theme. It's hard to determine what that is being that Void has never wanted to have an established setting or story line. As much as the site has always stated "Void is whatever you want", I think if we're going to publish a comic we should all agree on one common thing that makes a Void Comic a Void Comic.

It seems like a ramble (and probably doesn't make a whole bunch of sense). The best example I can think of is Detective Comics of the Golden Era. It contained detective stories. And even when superheroes became the huge thing and DC (the publisher) said 'Make another superman', they made sure they're superhero (Batman) stayed in that vein of detective-ing.

So I think the one common factor for Void comics should be that it takes place in 'Void City', a place where super powered people run around. From there people can submit stories, based on their current characters or entirely new stories. From there, the editor of the comic would prove important as they would decided what will work and ensure that new readers would understand.

Depending on the amount of the submission I think it could function as a quarterly or possibly a monthly, if popularity (and sales) demands it.

I dunno. Go with Hux's idea. It sounds more artsy. Mine is too nerdy.
